Where did I go for my fieldwork?

Slapton Ley Field Center, Devon in South West England
Which coastal management scheme is used in North Hallsands?
Rip rap made of granite that was imported in from Norway.

What did i learn from the South Hams Today http://www.southhams-today.co.uk/ newspaper?

The rip rap was built in 1991 and it costed £100,000 and is expected to have a life span of arounf 25 years.
What was the cost benefit analysis of the rip rap in Hallsands?

3.125

This is quite low meaning that it is not very cost effective

What was the cost benefit analysis of gabions at Sunnydale?

10

Very cost effective compared to the rip rap at hallsands

What was the coastal management scheme being used at Beesands Village?

Wave return sea wall and rock armour

What did i learn from the field studies guide about the wave return sea wall and rock armour?

It was built in 1992 costing around £3 million with an expected life span of 100 years.
What was the flood risk score for the wave return sea wall and rock armour in Beesands Village?
4

This is a good score however it could have been improved it the distance between the sea defence and the buildings was larger, making it safer for the residents.

What was the flood risk score for the smaller wave return sea wall at Torcross?

30

This was the worst flood risk score, the smaller wave return sea wall that was very close to buildings and homes, which is quite worrying and could very easily threaten the safety of the residents and their properties.

What was the coastal management scheme at Slapton Sands?
Shingle bastions to protect the beach from the power of the destructive waves They are soft engineering

What was the total bipolar score for the shingle bastions?

-2

In what newspaper showed that recently it was decided to rebuild the shingle bastions?
Torquay Herald Express

www.torquayheraldexpress.co.uk/Lost-bastions-Slapton-shingle-rebuilt/story-12365545-detail/story.html

How much would the rebuilding cost and who would paid for it?

It will cost around £6,000 to carry out the work which will be paid for by South Hams Council and Devon County Council

How does rip rap decrease erosion?

The rip rap are large boulders that absorb wave energy and reduce the power of the waves, this protects the beach and the cliffs or buildings behind them.

What does a cost benefit analysis do?

It compares cost, life span and the number of properties it protects. the higher the cost benefit number the better the coastal management is.

What is the aim of the wave return sea wall and rock armour?

The aim of the wave return sea wall is to deflect the energy of the wave. They are effective in protecting cliffs from erosion and also act as a barrier to prevent flooding. The rock armour underneath the sea wall protects its base as well as reducing the energy of the waves.

What is a flood risk survey?

It compares the distance from the wave return sea wall to the closest building and the height from the top of the sea defence to calculate the likelihood and severity of a flood. The higher the flood risk score the greater the likelihood and severity of the flood.

What are shingle bastions?

This is where they move large amount of sand or shingle to create mounds and barriers to reduce the waves energy as it travels up the beach. This is slightly different to the others i have described as shingle bastions are soft engineering. This involves working with nature by using natural materials or allowing nature to take back areas.

What is a bipolar analysis?

This is when you rate a place or object on different criteria such as life span and safety to the public, the higher the bipolar score the more effective the coastal management scheme is. However it is very subjective.
