Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

- stimulates growth of follicles


- stimulates oestrogen secretion from larger follicles

Oestrogen (E2)

- prepares uterus and vagina for mating and breeding, vagina cornified, vulva redden, swell and odour.


- inhibits small follicle growth/promotes follice atresia


- causes behavioural oestrus "heat"


- increase and thickens cervical mucus


- stimulates pituitary gland to release LH


- Stimulates retrograde uterine contractions

Luteinising Hormone (LH)

- stimulates thecal cells to produce androgens


- causes ovulation (Graafian follicle bursts releasing ovum)


- stimulates the remnants of the burst follicle to form a corpus luteum (luteinisation)


- stimulates the corpus luteum to produce P4

Progesterone (P4)

- develops endometrium in prep for pregnancy


-decreases cervical mucus secretion


- prevents uterine contractions


-causes development of plug in cervix


-suppresses behavioural oestrus


- inhibits follicle growth


-sensitises the brain to E2 (for next oestrus)


-inhibits immune activity of uterus


-aids in mammogenesis

GnRH

-controls secretion of gonadotrophins (LH and FSH)


-changes the frequency of GnRH secretion by a pulse generator in the hypothalamus

PGF2a

-destroys the corpus luteum (luteolysis)
