Barley
Grain is spindle shaped with a wide groove down one side. Barley is a high energy, medium protein cereal grain. Most of the energy is in the form of starch. Less palatable than other cereals. |
Barley
Grain is spindle shaped with a wide groove down one side. |
Bruised Barley
Grain is spindle shaped with a wide groove down one side. |
Maize
Maize is a high energy, low protein cereal grain with the majority of energy supplied as starch. Good palatability. Low mineral status especially calcium. |
Oats
Grain is elongated with one end slightly flattened and has a fibrous coat. Oats are a medium energy, low protein cereal grain. A greater proportion of the energy is supplied as digestible fibre and oil when compared to wheat and barley. Very palatable. |
Wheat
Grain is oval shaped with a deep groove down one side. Wheat is a very high energy, medium protein cereal grain, with the majority of energy supplied as starch. Good palatability. |
Wheat
Wheat is a very high energy, medium protein cereal grain, with the majority of energy supplied as starch. Good palatability. |
Grassnuts
Usually manufactured from Italian and perennial ryegrass with lucerne (alfalfa) increasing in importance. Rich in crude protein and digestible fire. Retains most of the nutritional value of grass. Green pellet with good palatability. |
Grass Silage
Main form of conserved forage in the UK but quality varies dramatically and material should always be analysed. Green leafy to fibrous depending on species and growth stage at cutting. Palatability varies dramatically. |
Whole Crop Wheat Silage
High energy yellow/brown fibrous forage. Good to average palatability. |
Bran
Husk of grains - by-product of flour manufacture. High in phosphorous and magnesium but low in calcium. Low energy and starch levels. Average palatability. |
Brewers Grains
A moist by-product of the brewing industry. Pale brown with friable texture. High in digestible fibre and good quality protein which is undegradable due to the heat proces in manufacture. Very palatable and will aid forage intake. |
Citrus Pulp
By-product of fruit processing. Orange to dark brown pellets. Citrus Pulp is a high energy, low protein material, with the energy supplied mainly as sugar and digestible fibre. Palatability good but inclusion of lemon and grapefruit residue can make the product less palatable. |
Dark Grains
Cereal grain by-product of the malt whisky industry. Barley Distillers Dark Grains are a high energy and undegradable protein. May contain contain high levels of copper due to copper equipment used in the distillation process and therefore should not be fed to sheep. |
Linseed
By-product of the linseed (flax) oil process. Brown meal, lozenge or pellet. High in energy, oil, carbohydtrates and average protein. Good source of digestible fibre. Brown meal, lozenge or pellet. |
Maize Gluten
Cereal grain by-product of the starch industry which is available as light brown pellets or meal. Maize Gluten supplies high levels of energy as starch and digestible fibre and a significant quantity of protein. |
Rapeseed Meal
By product of oil manufacture. Brown/black friable oily meal. A high protein, good energy feed. Poor palatability. |
Soyabean Meal
By product of oil manufacture. Brown/black friable oily meal. A high protein, good energy feed. Poor palatability. |
Sugarbeet Shreds
By Product of the sugar industry. Brownish grey shreds. High in fermentable energy. Similar in energy levels to barley but low in protein. High in digestible fibre. Very palatable but must be soaked before feeding to horses (recommended 12 hours). |
Sugarbeet Nuts
By Product of the sugar industry. Brownish grey pellets. High in fermentable energy. Similar in energy levels to barley but low in protein. High in digestible fibre. Very palatable but must be soaked before feedig to horses (recommended 24 hours). |
Sugarbeet Flakes
By Product of the sugar industry. Brownish grey flakes. High in fermentable energy. Similar in energy levels to barley but low in protein. High in digestible fibre. Very palatable but must be soaked before feedig to horses (recommended 10 mins). |
