Discuss principles of hazard controls.
To be thoroughly familiar with potential hazards created by various materials, equipment and work processes used in Navy facilities. They shall also be aware of special designs required by OSHA and Navy developed standards to mitigate certain hazards.
Discuss safety and occupational health training requirements.
No matter your rank or position it is required to have certain occupational health training. In the OPNAVINST 5100.23G instruction it is listed in a matrix what training you need according to your rank.
Discuss small boat safety requirements.
- Inspect all equipment before use (boat falls/machinery/boat itself)
- Conduct an operations and safety briefing.
- Ensure personnel riding the boat wear an authorized securely fastened life jacket and a battle helmet.
Discuss safety requirements when conducting operations with helicopters.
- Avoid approaching within 50 feet of a helicopter when the rotor blades are turning, unless necessary.
- Whenever required to approach or leave a helicopter which has its blades rotating, remain in full view of the landing signalman. Remove soft hats topside during helicopter landing or take-off.
- Know the location and use of firefighting and lifesaving equipment.
- Prohibit garbage dumping during helicopter operations.
- Prohibit blowing tubes when helicopter is on or in close proximity to the flight deck.
Discuss electrical and electronic safety and tag-out precautions.
- Wear rubber gloves when using electric portable tools in hazardous conditions, such as wet decks or bilge areas.
- Wear leather gloves over rubber gloves when the work being done could damage the rubber gloves.
- Wear required PPE when working where particles may strike the eyes.
- Wear hearing protection when
working with noise hazardous tools or in the area where such work is being conducted.
- Do not use spliced cables.
- Do not use any portable equipment that has a frayed cord or broken/damaged plug.
- Make sure that the on/off switch is in the "off" position prior to inserting/removing the plug from the energized receptacle.
