Key assumptions

- Suggests that OCD is inherited and that individuals receive specific genes from their parents which influence the onset of OCD

-Suggests that abnormal levels of neurotransmitters and certain regions of the brain are implicated in OCD

Genetic explanations

OCD suffers are 4 times more likely to have a family member that also suffers from OCD. However it is likely that a combination of genes is involved in OCD development

COMT gene ----> dopamine - this is responsible for thought processes and pleasure reward pathway

SERT gene ----> serotonin is responsible for mood and anxiety . A mutation affects the transportation of serotonin between neurons - low levels

Neural explaination

OCD could be caused by abnormally high levels of dopamine --- dopamine enhancing drugs given to animals show that stereotyped symptoms of OCD are now present in the animal

Dopamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter ( increases firing of neurons) so high levels may influence concentration and inablity to stop obsessing
