What are the two forms of vitamin K and how are they absorbed? How is Vit K's absorption and its storage in the body different or the same as the other fat-soluble vitamins?

K1 (from plants) - absrobed into enterocytes actively
K2 (from bacteria) - absorbed into enterocytes passive All other fat soluble vitamins are absorbed into enterocytes passively only. Both K1 and K2 are then transported to the liver by chylomicrons like all other fat-soluble vitamins. |

Describe the role of vitamin K in blood clotting.
|
Vitamin K is a cofactor that helps clotting factors prothrombin convert to thrombin which then acts on fibrinogen --> fibrin to create blood clotting. Without vitamin K, blood favors bleeding over clotting.

What is the mechanism of action of warfarin, and what is the therapeutic use of this drug?

Warfarin interferes with the recycling of vitamin K, thus interfering with the production of bioactive clotting factors. The therapeutic use is to thin the blood for patients at risk for heart attack or stroke.

What is PT?
|
PT is prothrombin time; measures the time it takes for a patients blood to clot. More vit. K = lower PT. Normal results = 10-13 seconds

What is INR, and what is its relationship to PT?
|
INR is international normalized ratio. Ideal range is 0.8 – 1.2. This compensates for differences in tissue factor source and instrumentation used.
