Midgut:

Gives rise to GI tract from ... (distal to opening of bile duct) to proximal 2/3 of ...;

supplied by branches of ...;

receive sympathetic innervation from ...;

receive parasympathetic innervation from ... nerve
duodenum
transverse colon
superior mesenteric artery (SMA)
superior mesenteric ganglion
vagus
hindgut:

gives rise to GI tract from distal 1/3 of ... to upper part of ...

supplied by branches of ...

receive sympathetic innervation from ...

The small intestine consists of what 3 parts?

-... (first 10 inches)
-... (next 8 feet)
-... (last 12 feet)
duodenum
jejunum
ileum
Jejunum and Ileum:

more mobile than duodenum (which is held by mesentary)

jejunum begins at ... flexure and ileum ends at ... junction

together measure about 6m (proximal #/# --> jejunum, distal #/# --> ileum)

no sharp ... between them

coils of jejunum --> occupy ... part of abdominal cavity

coils of ileum --> occupy ... part of abdominal cavity and some extend into

Functions of all parts of small intestine are simple;

... of nutrients
... of nutrients
Digestion
Absorption
(small intestine)
Special structures inside the small gut are:

...: large circular folds. Largest in Jejunum, small in ileum.

...: microscopic, finger like projections. Longest in Jejunum, smaller in ileum.

...: collections of B-cell and T-cell lymphocytes to protect against bacteria. Commonly seen in ileum, only occasionally seen in jejunum.

Peyer’s patches
what is this?

-It occurs in 2 to 4% of people (more common in males)
-sometimes vitelline duct persists
-it represents a remnant of proximal part of vitelline duct (yolk stalk)
-it typically appears as a finger-like pouch, 3 to 6 cm long, that arises from antimesenteric border of ileum, 40 to 50 cm from ileocecal junction
-it may be connected to umbilicus by fibrous cord (26%)
-its wall contains all layers of ileum and may contain small patches of gastric and pancreatic tissues
-It may become inflamed and cause symptoms that mimic appendicitis
Ileal (Meckel's) Diverticulum
Large intestine:

arches around and encloses coils of ... and ...

functions
-store ... for disposal
-absorption of ... and ...
jejunum
ilium
feces
water
electrolytes
which artery is this?

Supplies hindgut
-Last 1/3 of transverse colon
-Descending colon
-Sigmoid Colon
-Part of blood supply to rectum
inferior mesenteric artery
