What proteins do bacteria use to obtain iron from their host?

Siderophores.

Iron is required for growth of most bacteria, however theres very little free iron in the human body, which is why bacteria use siderophores.

What are the sequence of events for obtaining iron via siderophores?

1. Bacterial release

2. Sideorophores take away iron from host iron-transport proteins by binding iron more tightly

3. Once siderophores binds iron (forming an iron-siderophore complex), it returns to the bacterium.

4. Iron-siderophore complex is taken up by receptors on the bacterial surface. Bacterium has iron.

What are the 4 ways that direct damage is done?

1. Disrupts host cell function

2. Uses host cell nutrients

3. Produces waste products

4. Multiplies in host cells and causes ruptures
