Advanced Caries

A classification of proximal surface caries. Category where caries has progressed all the way through the enamel, to or through the enamel, to or through the dentinoenamel Junction (DEJ) but less than halfway through the dentin toward the pulp.

Arrested Carries

Carries that is no longer progressing

Buccal Caries

Caries that involves the buccal surface of a tooth.
Caries
Disease of the calcified tissue of the teeth. The inorganic portion is demineralized and the organic tissues are destroyed
Cemental (Root) Caries
Caries that develops on the roots of teeth between the enamel border and the free margin of the gingiva.
Cementoenamel Junction (CEJ)
The area there the enamel covering the tooth crown meets the cementum covering the tooth root.
Cervical Burnout
A radiolucency often observed on the mesial and distal root surfaces near the cementoenamel junction. The radiolucent appearance is caused by the concave shape of the root at the cervical line and may be mistake for caries.
Dentioenamel Junction (DEJ)
The junction between the dentin and enamel of a tooth.
Incipient (enamel) Caries
The earliest stage of the caries process.
Interproximal
Between two adjacent tooth surfaces.
Interproximal Caries
See proximal caries: Caries found on the proximal surfaces (mesial and distal) of teeth.
Lingual Caries
Caries that involves the lingual surface of a tooth.
Mach Band Effect
An optical illusion that mimics the appearance of decay. Often occurs along boundaries of sharp contrast, especially around areas of slight overlapping between adjacent teeth.
Moderate Caries
A classification of proximal surface caries. Category where caries penetrate over halfway through the enamel toward the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ), but do not reach the DEJ.
Nonmetalic Restoration
Restoration containing no metal. May appear radiolucent, or radiopaque when radiopaque filler have been added to the restorative material.
Occlusal Caries
Caries found on the occlusal (chewing) surface of posterior teeth.
Proximal Caries
Caries found on the proximal surfaces (mesial and distal) of teeth.
Rampant Caries
Severe, unchecked caries that affect multiple teeth.
Recurrent (Secondary) Caries
Caries that occurs under a restoration or around its margins.
Severe Caries

A classification of proximal surface caries. Category where caries has penetrated over halfway through the dentin toward the pulp.
