How are Black Figure vessels made? Which city in Greece becomes the main producer of pottery in the Archaic period for export? What sort of scenes are depicted?

1. 3 stage firing process: slip added to vessel hilm is heated (oxidizing atmosphere) turns clay vessel red, add wood to hilm & close vents (reducing oxygen), return oxygen to hilm to turn vessel red again and slip stays black

What does it mean that Athens is the "school of Hellas"? Who is Perikles and what role does he play in Athens?

1. Athens was a major powerhouse with a navy and was becoming an imperial city. Created the Delian League with many allies. Lots of literature and writing within the city.


2. Perikles was an aristocrat who found a loophole in Athenian law that let him rule for 30 uears until his death. He was an elected general before becoming the one man ruling the democracy because of his charisma. Created the Periklean Building Program to develop the city more with not only religious structures but also political ones.

What were the four buildings a part of the Periklean Building Program and what were there purposes?

1. Parthenon- treasury of Athens with large area for storing goods, possibly a temple but there is no altar and missing cult statue.


2. Propylaea- "Gateway" to Acropolis with 5 entrances and a "picture gallery"


3. Temple of Athena Nike- small building dedicated to Athena the victorious


4. Erechtheion- temple to hold various old cult statues and give offerings to the gods and goddesses.

When does the change to Red Figure happen? How does Red Figure differ from Black Figure? Be able to name one Black Figure and one Red Figure artist?

1. Around 530 someone thought to reverse the traditional figure-ground relations of Greek pottery.


2. Red figure uses light figures on a dark background and details are no longer incised but painted with a fine brush and has a new treatment to space. Foreshortening and the third dimension had a prominence.


3. Exekias is a Black Figure artist and Euphronios is a Red Figure artist.
