Cocked Striker (Definition)

A striker/firing pin/detonator that is held in a cocked position under spring tension by a releasing mechanism.

Cocked Striker (Observation)

Do not strike, jar, or move ordinance items suspected of having a cocked Striker.

Movement (Definition)

Ordinance with sensitive fuzing or components such as creep springs, wet cell energizers or any unidentified ordinance item.

Movement (Observation)

-Perform initial movement of all unknown ordinance remotely.

-Do not strike, jar, or manually move ordinance items with possible movement hazards.

-Perform initial movement of all armed or possibly armed fuzes remotely.

-Be aware that extreme weather conditions such as gusty wind could cause enough stimuli to function some sensitive components or ordinance firing trains.

Ejection (Definition)

Ordinance or energetic tool that has a means to propel itself, or has the ability to extend or eject either ordinance other then ordnance related items.

Ejection (Observation)

-Initial approach should be conducted avoiding ejection hazard areas (ie. 45 degrees from the front or rear of the ordinance item.

-Avoid exposure to ejection area

Shaped charge (JET/EFP)

A charge shaped so as to concentrate it's explosive force in a particular direction. The charge can contain a liner or no liner. (Hollow Charge). The shape can take advantage of the Monroe effect or the Misznay-Schardin effect. The explosive jet or slug can be fatal to great distances forward of the longitudinal axis of the item.

Shaped Charge (Jet/EFP) (Observation)

-approach items so as to not be in line with the shape charge.

-readjust safe area if necessary so as to not be in line with the shaped charge.

-point the shaped charge in a safe direction or pointed at the ground during disposal.

Piezoelectric (PE) (Definition)

Physio electric crystals create an electric charge when stressed. Pizio electric crystals are found in ordinance fusing systems often times in point initiating base detonation or PIBD fuses. Piezoelectric crystals historically have been referred to as lucky.

Piezoelectric (PE) (Observation)

-armed physiolectric Crystal fusing systems May remain hazardous for an indefinite period of time. Do not disturb any armed ordinance with a piezoelectric Crystal firing system unless called for in specific publication.

-do not stress the crystal

-observe EMR and static precautions when dealing with PE firing systems

White phosphorus (WP) (Definition)

Material that spontaneously ignites upon contact with air. WP is used for incendiary screening and marking purposes. White phosphorus can come in a plasticized form known as plasticized white phosphorus (PWP)

White Phosphorus (WP) (Observation)

-protective equipment personnel should wear cotton leather or asbestos gloves a face shield and flame retardant clothing when working with WP munitions. Wear respiratory protection if required to be exposed to WP smoke.

-if necessary to handle or transport a smoking (leaking) WP munition submerged in water or cover it with mud wet sand or foam as quickly and gently as possible.

-WP is used in bursting smoke ordinance which containsburster tubes do not approach a smoking WP munition unless absolutely necessary. Burning WP May detonate the burster or disperse the explosive charge.

Fire (Definition)

And increased hazard when dealing with any pyrotechnic or incendiary ordinance or components. Examples include, fuels and oxidizers, fireworks or flash powders, combustible metals like magnesium zirconium or thermite, incendiary liquids like napalm fuels and encinogel, bursting or burning munitions, signals and flares.

Fire (Observation)

-anticipate high order detonation if burning

-do not inhale smoker fumes

-you saying to smother incendiary fires. Water main do say violent reaction or be completely ineffective depending on the mixture

-very incendiary loaded munitions in sand when transporting them this will smother any fire which could start-

-if observation of disposal is required where eye protection such as well just goggles to protect eyes

-do not attempt to dispose of photo flash munitions by burning

-do not approach the Burnside for 30 minutes after all signs of burning have ended

Smoke(Definition)

Used for screening marking targets or in practice ordinance to indicate impact. Burning smokes are initiated by pyrotechnic ignition and or expelling charge or miscreated by the exposure to moisture in the air.

Smoke (Observation)

-Approach from upwind

-we're adequate in respiratory protection in areas where strong concentrations of screening smokes can develop. Strong concentrations of screening smokes generally irritate the eyes and respiratory tract.

High Explosive (HE) (Definition)

The detonation of explosive fill in the ordinance or IED

High Explosive (HE) (Observation)

-distance and protection

-do not inhale the gaseous products of explosive detonations. Some of the gases produced are toxic.

Fragmentation (FRAG)

Casing or pieces of the ordinance item or IED that result from a detonation

Fragmentation (FRAG) (Observation)

-distance and protection

-reduce the hazards from potential "rogue fragments" by removing them from the ordinance item(s)' employing engineering controls and/or orientating "rogue fragment" producing parts of the ordinance away from the safe area.

Rogue fragment producing parts of the ordinance item include non-primary case fragmenting portions of the ordinance such as noses nose plugs suspension lugs strong back space plates cartridge case heads or base also known as rogue fragments.

-end item airstream components such as guided and control and stabilizer fins being streamlined by design, could be projected to greater distances as compared to primary case fragments.

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) (Definition)

Waves of electrical energy at radio transmission frequencies that could influence susceptible ordinance or IED components

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) (Observation)

-Limit transmissions in the area

-shield when applicable

Static (Definition)

An imbalance of electrical charges within or on the surface of the material. The charge remains until it is able to move away by means of an electrical current or electrical discharge.

Static (Observation)

At a minimum, touch bare skin to ground before touching anything that could be electrostatic discharge (ESD) susceptible.
