What is Cluster Sampling and When can it be used?

Cluster sampling can be used when the population is in groups. A random sample of these groups is selected and all the items in the selected groups are included in the sample. Cluster sampling is a practical way to bring down the costs of sampling.

What is Quota Sampling and When can it be used?

Quota Sampling involves splitting the population into groups with certain characteristics (e.g. age, gender) and selecting a given number fro each group. For example, a market researcher might ask 10 adults and 10 children about their reaction to the 2015 GCSE results. It is also often used in market research and polling.

What is Systematic Sampling?

In Systematic Sampling items are selected from the population at regular intervals either in time or in space. For example, every 5th car that passes a location or every 3rd house on a street.

What are Advantages and Disadvantages with Simple random sampling?

Advantage - Unbiased (Every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected

Disadvantage - Can be time consuming, and results are less representative than Stratified Sampling

What are Advantages and Disadvantages with Stratified?

Advantages - Most Representative and it is unbiased.

Disadvantages - Harder to analyse data, Need to know about the strata in advance.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages with Cluster Sampling?

Advantages - It is quicker than random sampling.

Disadvantages - Leads to less reliable data than random sample

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages with Systematic Sampling?

Advantages - Can be more convenient

Disadvantages - Not a random sample, so less representative.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages with Quota Sampling?

Advantages - It is Quicker and Cheaper

Disadvantages - Not a random sample, so less representative.

What are Open Questions?

Open questions allow a wide variety of responses.

e.g. What do you think about programmes on TV?

What are Closed Questions?

Closed Questions restrict the possible replies given and usually have a set of response boxes for the respondent to tick.

e.g. Are you over 18 years old?

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages with cumulative frequency diagrams?

Advantages - It shows more information about the distribution.

Disadvantages - It is harder to interpret, The extreme values of the distribution are not known.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages with Box Plots?

Advantages - They are easier to interpret, They show the extreme values.

Disadvantages - They show less detail.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Range as a measure of spread?

Advantages - Easy to find.

Disadvantages - Affected by extreme values, No use for advanced work

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Standard deviation as a measure of spread?

Advantages - Used for advanced work, Uses all the data.

Disadvantages - Affected by extreme values, Harder to calculate.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of InterQuartile Range as a measure of spread?

Advantages - Not affected by extreme values.

Disadvantages - Difficult to calculate, Only uses central 5% of the distribution.

What is a Stratum?

A Stratum is a group in the population.

What situations can use normal distribution?

- People's heights

- People's blood pressure

- People's body mass index

- Size of car parts from a factory
