How do we classify living organisms?

According to their shared characteristics, for example backbones or feathers

What are the five vertebrate groups?

Fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles and birds

What characteristics (method of gas exchange and reproduction) belong to reptiles and birds?

Exchange gas via lungs, and give birth to an internally fertilised egg which must hatch

What characteristics (method of gas exchange and reproduction) belong to mammals?

Exchange gas in the lungs, and give birth to live, internally fertilised young

What characteristics (method of gas exchange and reproduction) belong to amphibians?

Exchange gases across moist permeable skin, and give birth to eggs which are fertilised externally

What characteristics (method of gas exchange and reproduction) belong to fish?

Exchange gases in the lungs, and lay externally fertilised eggs

What are poikilotherms and homeotherms?

Poikilotherms - vertebrates that are cold blooded so cannot control their body temperature

Homeotherms - vertebrates that are warm blooded and can control their body temperature

Classify each of the five vertebrate groups into poikilotherms or homeotherms.

Poikilotherms - amphibians, fish,reptiles

Homeotherms - birds, mammals

What are the five kingdoms? What are their main characteristics? (Cell wall? Nucleus? Multicellular? Method of feeding?)

Animalia - multicellular organisms that have no cell wall or chlorophyll and find food from their environment - heterotrophic

Plantae - multicellular, have cellulose cell wall, and feed autotrophically - make their own food

Fungi - multicellular - non cellulose cell wall, no chlorophyll, feed on dead matter - saprophytic

Prokaryotes - single celled, with no distint nucleus

Protoctista - single celled, with a distinct nucleus

What are the seven classification group (in order if can)?

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species

Tip: Remember:

Kings of Poland Can't Order Food off Great Snakes

What is the definition of a species?

Organisms that can breed together to make fertile offspring

What is a hyrbid?

The offspring of two different species. They are usually infertile

What is a binomial name?

A name for organisms to reduce confusion in different countries over having different names for the same organism. It is two part; the first word is the organism's genus, the second part is its species

Why is the binomial naming system useful?

It enables scientists to communicate information about lots of species around the world, and helps them to identify areas of biodiversity where conservation efforts are needed
