What does the acronym RADAR stand for?
Radio Detection And Ranging
What are the RADAR designations for P-3 aircraft
APS-115
APS-137
How do you know when RADAR is radiating when the A/C is on the ground?
Wing, tail, top and bottom collision and taxi lights are all illuminated
IRDS is the old P-3 infrared imaging system still in use but very limited. What is the new imaging sensor called?
Advanced Imagining Multispectral Sensor (AIMS)
When high voltage power is applied to the RADAR, how far must personnel stand off?
75ft for APS-115
250ft for APS-137
HERO Ordanance requires the personnel stand off from the RADAR antenna of how many feet when in operation?
140ft for APS-115
250ft for APS-137
What does SASP stand for and what does it do?
Single Acoustic Signal Processor - It receives signal from the sonobouys and converts the signal to digital for video display and also provides audio information.
What does MAD stand for and what does it do? Where is the MAD Boom? What phase of ASW is MAD best for?
Magnetic Anomoly Detection - It measure for disturbances in the earths magnetic lines. These disturbances are often caused by metal and therefore an excellent sensor to pinpoint submarine position for attack. The MAD boom extends from the rear of the aircraft.
What does ESM stand for and what does it do?
Electronic Support Measures - it passively detects and classifys other RADARs operating. ESM provides bearing information only.
What is OTPI and what does it do?
On Top Position Indicator - a sonobouy has a small "cone of silence" where no RF energy is emitted from it directly on top of the buoy. OTPI looks for that cone of slience to obtain a better position of the buoy.
Data Processing System (DPS) interfaces the following systems to provide the TACCO better SA
Navigation, search, ordnance, release, display and comminucation.
Flight Director System (FDS) provides what to the pilot and is generated by whom?
a PIM based on fly-to-points input from the TACCO or NAVCOM
Electronic Flight Display System (EFDS) provides what information to the pilots via their Multi-Function Displays (MFDs)
Heading, course and attitude
Flight Directory Indicatior (FDI) provides?
Attitude and flight direction
Horizantal Situation Indicator (HSI) provides compass information to?
The pilot and co-pilot
The verticle gyroscope provides attitude information and is a back up to this system?
FDI and FDS/EFDS
A wet compass provides?
magnetic bearing
What navigational aids does the P-3 have?
Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) - radio based Point to point
Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) - Transponder/Reciever station to station that provides bearing and range
Inertail Navigation System (INS) - all weather and self contained system that provides velocity, attitude and heading
Global Positioning System (GPS) - satellite based system with 5-8 meter accuracy
Flight Management System (FMS) uses GPS for all phases of flight including approach
ICS is?
Intercommunication System - for iternal communication (1 headset jack in the nose wheel area). Allows for 12 headsets.
How many UHF radios does the P-3 have and where are they?
1 in the flight station and 1 at the NAVCOMMs station
Where is the VHF radio located?
co-pilots side of the flight station
2 HF radios are at the NAVCOMM station, where are the antennas?
both on top of the aircraft. The longer is HF1 and the shorter is HF2
Miniaturized Deamand Assigned Multiple Access (MINI-DAMA) does what?
Is a UHF radio leveraging satellites to provided extremely long range communications.
IFF provides identification and altitude information. Additional IFF provides this function?
IFF can be used to challenge held RADAR contacts to obtain indentity.
RADARs have multiple operating modes, what is the difference between search, ISAR and SAR modes?
Search shows surface and air targets as "blips". It also is used for weather avoidance.
ISAR and SAR both provide 2D pictures. ISAR uses the motion of the target being imaged while SAR uses the aircrafts motion to paint the picture.
What are the 3 types of countermeasures carried by the P-3?
Chaff, flare and electronic jammers
