What are betyls?

The name ancient Greeks and Romans gave meteorites.

What is the Kabba Stone?

A sacred black stone that Muslims pray to in Mecca, it is said to be a meteorite.

Who is Ernst Chladni?

The father of meteoritics.

What it is the titius-bode-law?

A mathematical relationship of planetary sequences that predicted that the large gap between mars and jupiter was filled by objects. This is what led to the discovery of Ceres and in turn all of the asteroid belt. The law states takes the sequence 0,3,6,12,and 24 and adds four to each number. The following sequence of numbers are divided by 10. The resulting sequence is how far in astronomical units the planets are from one another. It works pretty well.

Definitions

-Asteroid: a natural rocky object in space measuring 100 m to several hundred kilometres in diameter.

-Meteoroid: a natural rocky object in space measuring from a few millimetres to 100 m in diameter.

-Meteor: the visual streak of light associated with passage of a small meteoroid through Earth’s atmosphere; the heat energy producing the light is a result of friction between the object and molecules of gas in the atmosphere. Remember – a meteor is not the object, only the light phenomenon.

-Fireball: the light associated with a large meteoroid or asteroid as it interacts with the atmosphere.

-Meteorite: a fragment (any size) of either a meteoroid or asteroid that lands on Earth`s surface. Please remember – it is not called a meteorite until it actually lands on surface.

what is LINEAR?

Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research telescope.

How are asteroids named?

begin with a number representing the order in which it was discovered followed by any name.

What are Kirkwood gaps?

Jupiter's pull on asteroids in the belt is weak at certain points in its orbit. This allows for gaps through which objects can pass and enter solar system.

What is albedo?

Proportion of light reflected from an object. It ranges from 0 (perfectly black) to 1 (perfectly reflecting). Most asteroids have a low albedo.

Can asteroids differentiate into layers just as the earths core has?

Yes

What are the three main types of asteroids?

C-type: high carbon content;75% of all asteroids.

S-type: high silicon content;17%"

M-type: high metallic content;relatively high albedo

what are 4vesta and dawn.

the most thoroughly observed asteroid (very bright) and its spacecraft.

what are Hirayama families?

Groups of asteroids with similar characteristics because they cam forth as a result of a collision into a planetismal

What are NEAs or NEOs and how are they classified?

Near Earth Asteroid/Object.

1. Atens: they are in Earth's orbit most of the time but can cross out at times

2. Apollos: Come through Earth's orbit at times

3. Amors: Cross Mars' orbit but not Earth's

How often do apollo objects hit earth?

Earth is hit by an Apollo object once every 250,000 years, on average. Some of these are big enough to cause global effects.

What are trojan asteroids?

Asteroids orbiting the fourth and fifth lagrange points of major planets in the Solar System. Lagrangian points are points in between two large objects (i.e. sun and moon) that an object can stay stationary.

What is the Torino scale?

Measures the potential an NEO has to impact Earth.

No hazard-0

Normal-1

Merits attention- between 2 and 4

Threatening- between 5 and 7

Certain- between 8 and 10

What are PHAs.

Potentially hazardous steroids are at least 150 m in diameter and are within .05 AUs of Earth.

What is Apophis?

Asteroid given the highest ever Torino scale number, 4.
