Republic
is a government in which the people elect their own representatives. The U.S. would also become a republic.
unicameral legislature
a law-making body with one House of Representatives.
bicameral legislature
a law-making body with two houses- a Senate and a House of Representatives
Northwest Territory
land west of Pennsylvania reaching to the Mississippi River. These lands would become the Midwestern states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota.
Articles of Confederation
was the first form of government set up for the U.S. It was a loose confederation (grouping together) of 13 states instead of a strong and centralized nation.
Land Ordinance of 1785

set up a government for the western territory based on Thomas Jefferson’s ideas
Shay’s Rebellion
was a rebellion by farmers in Massachusetts who objected to taxes put on them by the state government. The rebellion was defeated, but it showed the need for a more effective national government.
