Topical Anesthetic

Route:
Dropped into the affected eye or eyes
Drugs: Proparcaine HCL (Alcaine)

Dose:
1-2 Drops in the affected eyes
Repeat dose every 5 minutes if indicated (max dose 3 applications).

Pedi: same as adult
Drugs: Proparcaine HCL (Alcaine)

Drug Action:
Topical anasthetic for eyes that blocks nerve impulses from sensory nerves.
Drugs: Proparcaine HCL (Alcaine)

Indications:
Burns to the eyes or corneal abrasions.
Pt. comfort prior to irrigation of eyes exposed to chemicals such as pepper spray or mace.

Precautions:
Caution patient not to rub eye.

Side effects
Innitial burning of stinging sensation.
Drugs: Proparcaine HCL (Alcaine)

Contraindications:
Trauma/laceration to the eyes.
Foreign bodies in the eyes.
Allergies to the "Caine" drugs.
