Generic: Metronidazole; Trade: Flagyl
Classification: Antibiotic, Antiinfective,
Dosages: PO, Injection, Cream, Lotion, Gel
Actions: This drug works by stopping the growth of bacteria and protozoa.This antibiotic only treats bacterial and protozoal infections
Indications: acute intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery), amebic liver abscess, anaerobic bacterial infections, peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess, and liver abscess, endometritis, endomyometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and postsurgical vaginal cuff infection and bacterial septicemia
Side Effects: Rarely reversible thrombocytopenia, vertigo, depression, dysuria, polyuria, dryness of mouth and fever
Adverse Reactions: Convulsive seizures, encephalopathy, aseptic meningitis, optic and neuropathy
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to drug, other nitroimidazole derivatives & First-trimester pregnancy in patients with trichomoniasis
Nursing Implications: Discontinue therapy immediately if symptoms of CNS toxicity develop, monitor for seizures and peripheral neuropathy,Obtain total and differential WBC counts before, during, and after therapy,Monitor patients on lithium for elevated lithium levels and report appearance of candidiasis
Patient Teaching: Refrain from intercourse during therapy for trichomoniasis unless male partner wears a condom to prevent reinfection, Complete the entire prescription even if you feel better, Urine may darken or turn reddish-brown, Do not drink alcohol while taking this drug and do not breast feed

Classification: Antihyperlipidemic
Dosages: PO
Actions: Inhibits peripheral lipolysis and decreases the hepatic excretion of free fatty acids
Indications: Hypertriglyceridemia in adult patients with very high elevations of triglyceride levels at risk for pancreatitis,Reduction of coronary heart disease risk in patients who have not responded to diet, exercise, and other agents and have low HDL levels in addition to high LDL and triglyceride levels
Side Effects: Headache, Dizziness, epigastric pain, back pain and arthralgia
Adverse Reactions: Hypokalemia, leukopenia, anemia and eosinophilia
Contraindications: Contraindicated with allergy to gemfibrozil, hepatic or renal dysfunction, primary biliary cirrhosis, gallbladder disease
Nursing Implications: Administer drug with meals or milk if GI upset occurs, arrange for regular follow-up visits, including blood tests for lipids, liver function, CBC, blood glucose during long-term therapy
Patient Teaching: Take the drug with meals or with milk if GI upset occur, report severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, fever and chills or sore throat, severe headache, vision changes

Actions: Low-molecular-weight heparin that inhibits thrombus and clot formation by blocking factor Xa, factor IIa, preventing the formation of clots
Indications: Prevention of DVT, Prevention of ischemic complications in patients with angina pectoris
Side Effects: Chills, fever, urticara, asthma, and erythema at the site
Adverse Reactions: Hemorrhage
Contraindications: Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to enoxaparin, heparin, pork products; severe thrombocytopenia; uncontrolled bleeding and use cautiously with pregnancy or lactation, history of GI bleed, spinal tap, spinal/epidural anesthesia
Nursing Implications: Check patient for signs of bleeding; monitor blood tests, give injections subcutaneously, do not aspirate, do not massage site after injection
Patient Teaching: Teach patient to use electric razor, use soft brittle toothbrush, report any incidences of bleeding and monitor response to drug by having blood test done
