mise-en-scene

a French term for "put into the scene", refers to things that have been included in shots, often in the background to give a certain impression or meaning

interview

when someone is asked questions to answer in front of the camera

exposition

the documentary's "line of argument", what it's trying to say

observation

the camera seems to be 'unseen' or ignored by the subjects

subject

the people/things being filmed (not the same as the topic)

dramatisation

when the people in the documentary act out something that happened - they obviously know the camera is there

dialogue

conversations between subjects (or between a subject and the filmmaker)

opinion

a personal belief that could be disputed by another person (and therefore not fact)

persuade

to convince someone to believe something, to change their opinion

when you can hear someone talking but they are not shown on screen, often used as a narrator
