Diagnostic Criteria

A. Disruption of identity characterized by 2 or more distinct personality states; marked discontinuity in sense of self and agency; alterations in affect, behavior, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition, sensory-motor function


B. Recurrent gaps in recall of everyday events, important personal info, traumatic events inconsistent with ordinary forgetting


C. Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational areas of functioning


D. Disturbance is not normal part of broadly accepted cultural or religious practice. In children, symptoms not better explained by imaginary playmates or fantasy play


E. Symptoms not attributable to physiological effects of a substance (blackouts, chaotic behavior during alcohol intoxication) or other medical conditions (complex partial seizures)
