Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome

When receptors for testosterone are absent or defective, a genetic male (XY) will display female secondary sexual characteristics. Serious cases will result in a genetic male appearing entirely female at birth.

Ectopic Pregnancy

When the blastula implants itself outside the uterus. Most occur in the fallopian tube.

Spina Bifida

Failure of neural tube to close so that some or all of spinal cord is exposed.

Anencephaly

Failure of neural tube to close so that brain fails to develop and skul is left open.

Teratogens

Substances that interfere with development, causing defects or death of developing embryo.

Gigantism

Excess of growth hormone released in childhood before closure of epiphyseal plate.

Dwarfism

Deficit of growth hormone released in childhood before closure of epiphyseal plate.

Acromegaly

Abnormal lengthening in the smaller of the long bones due to growth hormone excess. Mostly in head, hands, feet.

Hypothyroidism

Deficiency of iodine or inflammation of the thyroid, where thyroid hormones are insufficiently secreted. Lethargy, decreased body temp, slowed respiratory and heart rate, cold intolerance, weight gain.



Cretinism

Deficiencies in thyroid hormones at birth resulting in mental retardation and developmental delay.

Hyperthyroidism

Excess of thyroid hormone resulting from a tumor or overstimulation. Heightened activity level, increased body temperature, increased respiratory and heart rate, heat intolerance, and weight loss.

Erythroblastosis Fetalis

Condition where an Rh+ fetus is attacked by maternal anti-Rh antibodies, resulting in hemolysis of fetal cells.

Edema

Accumulation of excess fluid in interstitium.

Tetanus

Where contractions become so frequent that muscle is unable to relax at all, resulting in muscle fatigue.
