A01 le Bon

Le Bon looked at riots in France 1895 and found that a huge crowd had a ‘collective mind’ as they were subjected to suggestibility from others and ‘social contagion’ from the group.

Zimbardo coined the phrase deindividuation. This is the sense of anonymity by losing ones identity and to become disinhibited.

The person would not self assess (no longer privately self aware) and you will no longer fear social evaluation (no longer publically self aware).

The person shares the blame with others as they are in a crowd. The crowd is faceless as the individuals are sharing the blame and they are not distinguishable from other people.

If you are masked or covered in some way – means you are not assuming your public identity and you act differently.

A01 Deiner

Deiner (1976) people on Halloween were much more violent when v.dressed up and their identity was concealed

A02 support

Mann looked at lots of suicides in the 60s. During around ½ of these suicides attempts there was a ‘bating crowd’. He found that when there was a large crowd, they were much more likely to shout and if the victim was far away and if it was dark, they were more likely to shout. This supports the idea that when a person’s identity is lost and are therefore anonymous, there is increased aggression.

AO3

Lacks historical validity

High ecological validity as it happened in real life

AO2

Zimbardo (1969) got female participants and he told them to shock someone to see whether it would affect their learning. They were shocking a girl.

There were 2 conditions. In condition 1, participants were dressed up in big cloaks and masks and were given a number instead of a name. They were put in separate cubicles and were not introduced to anyone else. In condition 2, they were referred to by name, they were introduced to each other, they wore their own clothes.

The people in condition 2 shocked the participant on average for double the amount of time than condition 1. This supports that when there is anonymity and concealed identity which leads to no private self awareness , people are more likely to carry out aggressive acts.

IDA

Gender Bias – According to Cannavale et al (1970) male and female groups respond differently under deindividuation. This supports a gender bias.

IDA

Culture Bias – Different culture groups respond differently under deindividuation. This supports a culture bias. Counter argument that it is universal.

IDA

Ethics – Lot of lab studies on deindividuation involve people perceptually harming others. This could lead to long-term harm psychologically. E.g. Zimbardo’s prison study.
