Oral Cavity

Ingestion of food occurs through the mouth. Oral cavity contains:


- Teeth


- Tongue


- Opening from the salivary glands

Teeth

Function in the mechanical breakdown of food. Serves to increase the surface area of food for enzyme action.

Chemical Digestion

- Where digestion of carbohydrates begins.


- Salivary glands secrete saliva.


- Saliva obtains enzyme amylase & digests starch

Esophagus

- Where swallowed food moves.


- Peristaltic action of the esophagus moves food into the stomach.

Stomach

- Muscular organ


- contains gastric glands which secrete enzymes and hydrochloric acid.


- Hydrochloric activity of gastric protease.


- Under the influence of enzyme, protein digestion begins.
