What is the definition of a "true" cyst?
Pathologic cavity lined by epithelium and containing fluid or semisolid material
What are the three most important points in detection of cyst?
1. APPEAR RADIOLUCENT : fluid filled
2. WELL DEFINED BORDERS : slow growing 3. HYDRAULIC APPEARANCE : extending uniformly in all dimensions |
What are some points that would allow you to differentiate radiographically between BENIGN and MALIGNANT lesion?
1. BORDERS:
BENIGN smooth, well-defined, may be corticated. MALIGNANT - irregular, poorly defined, and infiltrative. 2. DESTRUCTIVE: BENIGN - usually slower growing, less destructive, adjacent tissues have time to react to the growth. MALIGNANT - more likely to destroy cortical structures such as lamina dura, antral borders, nasal fossae walls, margin of tooth crypts, etc. 3. PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE: BENIGN - usually displace tooth roots, developing tooth crypts, and other structures. MALIGNANCIES - the same, but often will take the "path of least resistance". Tend to "flow around" teeth, invade PDL, etc. 4. |
