The abolition of slavery

- slavery is a type of forced labour where a person is considered the legal property of another


- it was an accepted part of society up until the 19th century


- the translantic slave trade operated from the 17th - 19th century


- in the 19th century abolonist groups in Europe and America argued that slavery violated a person's rights and it was also criticised by Christians


- Britian passed the slavery abolition act 1833 (UK) to officially slavery in the colonies


- after ww2 the United Nations signed the UDHR in which article 4 states that: "no one shall be held in slavery"

- the right of all people to a basic education


- most countries pushed for this in the 1800's


- in Europe the church took the role of educator from the 16th - 17th century


- Australia passed various acts in the 1870's to makes education free and compulsory for all


- article 26 of the UDHR states that: "everyone has the right to education"
