Rationalizing/intellectualizing

Explaining away one's feelings by giving socially acceptable, positive sounding explanations rather than acknowledging the painful emotions

Sublimation

A constructive form of Displacement in which sexual or unacceptable urges are re-channeled into productive activities

Repression

The complete exclusion from consciousness of anxiety-producing thoughts, feelings, or impulses. Looks like "forgetting"

Displacement

Emotional impulses are redirected towards a different person to "displace" them from the actual source

Projection

The attribution if your own unacceptable urges or qualities to others. A person who likes a lot always thinks others are lying to him

Reaction formation

Thinking or behaving in a way opposite to the unacceptable urges or impulses i.e. little boy likes classmate but constantly teases her and pulls her hair

Denial

The failure to recognize or admit to unacceptable urges or impulses. An alcoholic thinks he doesn't have a problem.

Undoing

A form of "unconscious" repentance. Doing something that you think will neutralize the unacceptable thought or action. Giving to charity after cheating or stealing from someone

Regression

Reversion to behavior more appropriate for a younger child or teenager when faced with unacceptable feelings or urges.
