Altruism

Stressors and conflicts are addressed by meeting others needs. Receiving gratification from others makes them feel good

Sublimation

Unconsciously substituting good behavior and activities for unacceptable strong impulses the person is experiencing. An angry man becomes a butcher.

Suppression

Repression

Transfer of emotions from one thing to another. Man gets yelled at by boss then come home and yells at wife. Etc. Not always adaptive

Unacceptable thoughts and behaviors are being kept out of awareness or over compensated for the complete opposite behavior or emotion. Someone who hates children coaches little league

Somatization

Transferring anxiety unconsciously into a physical symptom. Someone is supposed to give a speech but gets laryngitis the day of it.

Undoing

Compensating for and act it communication. A person thinks dirty thoughts so they wash their hands.

Rationalization

Justifying illogical ideas actions or feelings by developing acceptable explanations.
