Cutaneous Receptors |
The types of sensory receptors found in the dermis or epidermis. They are apart of the somatosensory system. |
Stimulus Modality |
Aka sensory modality. One aspect of a stimulus or what we perceive after a stimulus. For example the temperature modality is registered after heat or cold stimulate a receptor. Some sensory modalities include: light, sound, temperature, taste, pressure, and smell. |
Adequate Stimulus Perception |
The awareness or consciousness of the excitation. |
Exteroceptors |
A sensory receptor that receives external stimuli. Ex: Eyes (vision), Cochlea (hearing), Taste Buds, Touch receptors, etc. |
Interoceptors |
A sensory receptor that receives stimuli from within the body, especially from the gut and other internal organs. Ex: pH sensors, nociceptors (pain), muscle length sensors, muscle tension sensors |
Sensory Transduction |
Converts the energy of the stimulus into a receptor or generator potential. |
Tonic Receptors |
Slowly adapting receptors that respond for the duration of a stimulus. |
Phasic Receptors |
Rapidly adapt to a constant stimulus and turn off. They fire once more when the stimulus turns off. |
