What is culture?

The way of life for a particular society who share the same norms and values.

What are norms and values?

Norms- Unwritten and unspoken rules of everyday life


Values- Beliefs and ideas/moral views that society sees as important and that are accepted by a majority of society

What are customs?

Traditional and regular norms of behavior associated with specific social situation, events and anniversaries

What is status?

A position within society. All members in a society are given a social position by their culture.

What are the two type of status and what do the mean?

Achieved Status- Involves doing something to earn a particular position


Ascribed Status- A status that is fixed and given to you e.g passed down through the family.

What are roles in a culture?

A set of expectations that a person of a certain status is expected to follow

What us cultural hybridity?

A mixture of two or more cultures that merge their norms and values together to create a hybrid culture.

What is cultural diversity?

Differences and variety found in societies.

What are subcultures?

"A culture within a culture". A smaller grouping of people who share distinctive norms and values within a wider culture

What is high culture?

Cultural products and activities that are seen to have a very high status. It is seen as superior to other forms of culture and is often appreciated by those with a high level of education and upbringing

What is popular culture?

Products and activities that are enjoyed by a majority of the population e.g certain music, fashion, book, TV shows

What is consumer culture?

Social status, values, and activities are centered on the consumption of goods and services.

What is global culture?

Growing trend of products and activities that are becoming identical across many different cultures and national cultures lose their distinctiveness.

What is globalisation?

Global spread and integration of ideas, values,norms, behaviors, and ways of life.

What is deviant?

People who do not follow the norms of society

What is a value consensus?

A majority of a society sharing the same norms/values/views

What is social integration?

Being accepted into a society due to following norms and values
