-many people only know one or two hispanics and think all are the same, when really all are very different- with distinct cultures and different characteristics

Familias hispanas-the family is very important en hispanic culture. it is the center of many social and cultural activities. It is the center of support. Here are different representations of the hispanic family:




Pío de Jesús Pico La familia Pico- of African, American Indian, and European blood. They were a very politically powerful in the history of California. Pio de Jesus Pico was the last mexican governor of "alta california". El Pico Boulevard in LA was names in his honor.




Isabel Allende- spent her childhood in Chile. Is one of the most well known latina authors,employed elements of magical realism in her novels. She has lived in different countries and now lives in the US. Some of her works are based on familiar experiences. Her uncle was Salvador Allende, the president of Chile between the years 1970 and 1973.




Lorenzo Zambrano Trevino- On the Forbes list for one of the richest men in the world. Since 1995 he has been the president of the mexican company CEMEX founded by his grandfather and an important producer of cement. Sr. Zambrano began to work en Cemez in 1968 and has worked in many positions for the company.

los hispanos en los estados unidos:


I work with sociology in the city of Chicago. My job fascinates me because i talk with many hispanic people. I study their characteristics, their culture, and their daily life. I am going to explore some examples of hispanic culture individually and family, here in the US.




Los Premios Herencia Hispana


These awards were created in the year 1987 and the awards ceremony is celebrated each September in the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The awards pay homage to many hispanic people that have had a great positive influence on the US. The people that have been rewarded some from many different fields and include youth leaders.




Oscar Hijuelos:


The son of a cuban immigrant. He was born in New York in 1951 and now he writes novels with familiar themes. He has won many awards like the Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love in the year 1990. He was the first hispanic to win this prize.




La familia Lopez:


The Lopez Family of Texas is the first family of Taekwondo of the US. Of Nicaraguan heritage, the three siblings, Steven , Mark y Diana have been practicing the sport since they were children. The three siblings have won medals in the Olympic Games of 2008 in Beijing. The oldest brother is their trainer and is very proud of his family.




El Mes de Herencia Hispana


El Mes de la Herencia Hispana is celebrated from the 15th of september to the 15th of october. The celebrations takes place in cities across the US.




El Festival de la Calle


Each march, there is an enormous festival in the Calle Ocho de la Pequeno of Miami. In 23 blocks of the city, the great cuban population celebrates their cultural heritage with food, dancing, music, and activities for children and the whole family.




El Paseo del Rio en San Antonio, Texas:


Sundays, the family can spend nice hours on the Paseo del Rio. It is very popular to take a walk through the pass. To the families that love to walk, boating, to eat in a restaurant next to the river or simply to sit and watch the people that are passing by.
