Crime and deviance as relative

Crime & Deviance changes according to time, location and culture. Criminal behaviour can be defined differently within different cultures

eg homosexuality & polygamy are crimes in some societies.

Functionalism & Crime

key sociologist : DURKHEIM

* Crime is inevitable and neccessary

* Crime has positive functions

* Crime keeps society healthy and avoids anomie

CRIME IS INEVITABLE

Everyone is socialised differently and some people may not be effectively socialised. Poor socialisation means that they do not accept the shared norms and values of mainstream society which can make them deviant

Positive functions of crime

* Re-marking social boundaries -- affirms social norms and values

*Media coverage of crime -- used as warning to others to not commit crimes

*Creates social bonds -- Communities are strengthened as we unite in disapproval

* Safety valve -- a bit of deviance reduces serious problems
