Chapter 4 - General SAR Policies

Salvage (other than towing)

When commercial salvors are on scene, Coast Guard may assist if the salvor requests.



When no commercial salvors are on scene, Coast Guard should only engage in salvage (other than towing) to prevent a worsening situation or complete loss of the vessel. Any salvage shall be performed at the discretion of the unit CO/OINC.

Salvage (other than towing) for small craft

When no commercial salvors are available, Coast Guard may refloat a grounded boat that is not in peril of further damage or loss if:



1. unit is capable of rendering assistance


2. owner requests assistance and agrees to the specific effort to be made, and


3. Coast Guard personnel are not put at risk

What else can you do instead of refloating the vessel?

2. Help set anchor.


3. Evac passengers.


4. Help determine the vessel's seaworthiness.

What is Coast Guard's firefighting policy?

Coast Guard personnel shall not engage in independent firefighting operations, except to save a life or in the early stages of a fire.



Coast Guard may engage in firefighting in support of a regular firefighting agency under the supervision of a qualified fire officer (certified under the National Fire Protection Association).



Coast Guard units may participate in firefighting in an ICS response structure.
