Principles of
Manual handling
Guideline procedures
1/ the team should consist of a minimum two personnel
2/ the team leader carries the guideline
3/ the last firefighter of the team makes the line fast at a convenient height above the ground. The line is to be fastened on the side of the search. Crossing over with other lines is to be avoided.
4/ team members (except the leader) should attach themselves to the line by the hook of their personal line when the guideline is being laid. Alternatively attach to the firefighter in front.
5/ when attached individually to the guideline, team members should maintain contact , as reasonably as possible, by physical touch
6/ if a team has to retire, the container and line should be removed and fastened at a convenient point for subsequent use by crew/teams.
7/ to move away from the guideline, personal lines are to be used to their full length, i.e 6m.
When the distance is greater, a branch line must be used
8/ it is not necessary for firefighters operating branches to remain attached to guidelines by personal lines.
