Victorian Novelist And poet Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Dorset and died in 1928. Father was a stonemason and he was meant to follow in his footsteps but he ended up not doing it as mother encouraged him to take in a literary interest. Written in 1902 time of boer war

Structural Devices with quotes and meanings
Use of Dramatic Monologue, “was out of work”, makes the reader feel sympathy as he had to join war due to his circumstances
Enjambement, “had He and I met...” - shows that he feels strongly about this and is trying to convince himself that he has done the right thing by killing his man
Straightforward title, “The Man He Killed”, shows what the poem is about and keeps the reader wondering about this man who got killed

Imagery, “And killed him in his place” - makes the reader feel like they are there and causes them to feel empathy for the writer

Repetition, “rode the six hundred” - emphasises how not one man was left and that there was this many brave soldiers and shows how it is easy to remember
Metaphor, “jaws of death” - creates a sense of imagery and shows how brave they are for carrying on into it without fear
Tone is one of happiness but slight sadness as they are dead now
Wrote in the past tense to show it has occurred and shows how proud they are
