Plato on the soul
•Plato was convinced that people have eternal souls which connect them to the world or forms
•for Plato the soul is immortal and the body is clearly not .
•the soul is temporary united with the physical body , but can leave the body and move on.
•Plato wanted to show that Socrates had not failed to educate people about philosophy because his soul will continue to live.
•’chariot being pulled by 2 horses - appetite and emotion ‘
Dualist view
Aristotle on the soul
•more interested with the physical world - could be learnt about by scientific , empirical observation.
•in Aristotles view the soul is a real thing - ‘substance’ - essence
Aristotle believed that the soul was inseparable from the body and the soul gives the body its essence .
Materialistic attitude .
•different souls - vegetative , perceptive .
Aristotle disagreed with Plato
Mind & BODY
•the human body consists of the physical stuff of which humans are made of
•for materialist philosophers , we are simply our bodies.
•many people understand the mind to be part of a person which has intelligence and emotion.
