"Very" = intensifier. Makes dark more dense.
"Dark" = adjective choice. Fits feel of London for victorians.
Sherlock Holmes view on woman
"Woman are never to be entirely trusted" - Holmes
"Woman" = collective noun. All woman.
"Never" = definite. In view of gender difference.

"Act on your own judgement" - Holmes
"Act" = imperative verb. Commands him to be involved.
"Judgement" = Trust Watson's decision.
