Reasons for Scottish Prosperity...
-Ships, built in Inverness, were used to carry troops on Crusade.
-Berwick's wool trade flourished and brought in a lot of silver, so much so that Alexander could build several monasteries and castles.
-Increase of wool being exported to Flanders Beligum).
-Alexander profited from the absence of adult tenants for long periods in the earldoms of Carrick, Angus, Atholl and Fife (profits used to support the King and his family).
-Aberdeen's ports were increasingly important they were open to the North Sea.
Control of the Highlands and Islands...
-When Alexander III took the throne, the western isles belonged to Norway.
-Alex gained back the Isles after a short battle on the 1st and 2nd of October, 1263.
-He then claimed the Isle of Man, Ross, Caithness and Skye. His show of power forces the nobles to surrender to the Scottish King.
Relationship with England...
-Alex married Margaret, daughter of Henry III, during the summer of 1251. Thus creating a strong tie between the two countries.
-Alex demonstrated his independent nature in reprimanding Henry for the failure to pay dowry regularly.
-Additionally, when Edward I succeeded the English throne in 1272, Alex refused to acknowledge homage to him for the Kingdom of Scotland.
