Theory - Part 1
1. Social learning is learning through observing and imitating.
2. We can observe live and symbolic models which are equally as influential.
3. We imitate models with a shared characteristic to expect the same outcome.
4. In between observing and imitating we think of the good or bad consequences.
5. This is proven with his own experiment.
Key Features of the Bobo Doll experiment;
1. It took place in the labs at Stanford University.
2. The IV was whether or not the children were exposed to an aggressive or passive model (or no model as a control condition).
3. The DV was the level of aggression expressed towards Bobo.
4. Critics argue that children are aggressive to please researchers and parents as that is what they believe they should do.
- It is also argued that boys are naturally aggressive as they have more testosterone.
5. It was standardised as they all interacted with the Bobo doll.
A study of Aggression; the Bobo Doll experiment by Bandura in 1961;
Aim: To see wheter observing violence makes you imitate the violent actions.
Procedure: Young children (3-5) observe the live models (adults) interact with Bobo.
ALL CONDITIONS: a child was in a room with toys (Bobo).
AGGRESSIVE: Model would scream and hit Bobo for 10 minutes whilst the child observed.
PASSIVE: children were left to play.
Results: Children who observed aggression ALL showed signs of aggression towards the Bobo Doll. Children who had a passive model played calmly.
Conclusion: every child with the same sex model copied them and what all children saw they did which contradicts the initial predictions made by Bandura saying that we purge aggression whenever we see it.
