Popular Sovereignty
A government ruled by the people
ex. we have means to remove the President if he does not do the will of the people.
Republicanism
The people exercise their power by voting for representatives.
ex. We elect representatives to the U.S. House and Senate, rather than voting directly on everything.
Federalism
A system of government in which power is divided between a central government and smaller units, such as states
ex. National vs. State vs. City governments.
Checks and Balances
Each branch of government can exercise some power over the others.
ex. The President can veto an act of Congress.
Separation of Powers
The division of government. No one branch is given all the power.
ex. We have the Legislative (Congress), Executive (President) and Judicial (Supreme Court) branches.
Limited Government
Everyone, citizens and government leaders, must obey the rule of law
ex. The President can be impeached for breaking laws.
Individual Rights
Personal liberties or freedoms the government cannot take away.
ex. Freedom of Speech, of the Press, etc.
