CONSTITUTION
a set of rules, processes and principles describing the political institutions of a state, the distribution of power among the institutions, the rights of citizens and the limits to the powers of the state.
UNCODIFIED CONSTITUTION
a constitution that is not set down in a single, organised document...this means that it is to be found in a number of different sources...the UK constitution is an example of this.
PARLIAMENTARY SOVEREIGNTY
the principle that parliament is the ultimate source of all authority and power within the political system. it also means that parliament is the ultimate source of all law and there is no higher legal authority.
CONSTITUTIONALISM
a term that describes a system of government where the government itself is subject to constitutional rules. the opposite of constitutionalism is an arbitrary government. the UK being a monarchy has a government that is 'theoretically' arbitrary, but in fact the monarch has no power. both monarchy and government are subject to constitutional rules even though the constitution is not codified.
ELECTIVE DICTATORSHIP
a description that is often used for the relationship between the government and parliament within the UK. it suggested that once elected, a government has almost dictatorial power because it dominates parliament through its majority in the house of commons.
UNITARY CONSTITUTION
a political system where all legal sovereignty is located in one single place. the UK constitution is a unitary constitution will all legal sovereignty resting with the UK parliament.
