The unsaturation number is the number of unsaturated bonds (double or triple bonds) in a chemical structure. The equation is UN = {[2(carbons)+2]-[(hydrogen-nitrogen+halide]}/2
For C6H12O6, UN ={[(2x6)+2]-(12) }/2= {14-12}/2 = 2/2= 1
Therefore, there are no unsaturated bonds (double or triple bonds) in this structure
For phenol, UN= [(2x6+2)-6]/2 =(12+2-6)/2 =8/2 = 4
Benzene rings have only 3 double bonds, but the electrons distribute a fourth double bond across the 6 carbons. ANY unsaturation number over 3 is indicative of an aromatic ring
