GLUCOSE GEL TYPE:
Oral glucose solution [No schedule]
GLUCOSE GEL PRESENTATION:
37.5g tube containing 15g glucose
GLUCOSE GEL ACTION:
1. Glucose is the main energy source for the body cells, especially the brain.
2. Glucose preparation is rapidly absorbed from oral/buccal mucosa.
3. Causes an increase in blood glucose concentration.
Onset: approximately 10 minutes
GLUCOSE GEL USE:
Treat hypoglycaemia; altered conscious state following blood glucose estimation
if BGL < 4, and patient is conscious and able to swallow.
GLUCOSE GEL DOSE:
1 x tube of 15g glucose orally.
May be repeated once after 15 minutes if BGL still < 4 mMol/l and level of conscious still altered
Total maximum dose 30g.
Not to be given IV or IM.
GLUCOSE GEL NOTE:
Patients should swallow the entire contents of the tube (where possible) to maximise the rise in BGL.
Patients who respond to Oral Glucose Gel should eat to prevent later development of further hypoglycaemia.
Re-check BGL following treatment.
Gel liquefies when over 30°C (it is still useable). Re-cool if possible.
GLUCOSE GEL CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
1. Impaired or absent swallow / gag reflex
