Calculate the energy released by a reaction from binding energies
If in U:
Work out difference in mass between inputs and products (ensure that products have a smaller mass than inputs)
Mass in u x 931.5 gives energy in MeV
How much energy is released, in J, from 1 kg of reactant... questions
Energy per unit mass, take the energy released and divide it by the mass of the nucleons (no. nucleons x 1.67x10^-27)
Binding energy using the mass defect
Keep all values in u untill very last part of question, then convert
∆m = (Z x mp) + (N x mn) - Melement
∆m = X u
Binding energy = X x 931.5 = Y (MeV)
