What is an indicator species?
A species who's presence, absence or abundance tells you about environment quality
What is mark and recapture sampling?
Capturing a sample of a population, marking them and then releasing them again. After an interval a second sample is taken
What is the Mark and Recapture sampling equation?
N=MC/R
Where:
N is population
M is number captured and marked (1st sample)
C is number captured on second sample
R is number recaptured
1. The population is evenly distributed
2. Each individual in the population has an equal chance of being sampled
3. The population remains constant
4. Marking has no survival effect on the individual marked
Banding- Metal bands are attached to the limb of an organism
Tagging- allow for the remote tracking of organsims
Surgical Implantation- Animal undergoes surgical procedure to have tags implemented
Painting- Non-toxic, bio degradable paint is applied to an organism
Hair Clipping- A clearly identifiable section of hair is cut off
