An individual has uncontrolled diabetes, what happens to the metabolic pathways?
- any processes that are dependent on glu oxidation will be decreased & other processes to generate E will be increased
- FA oxidation is increased: cells break down f.a's to produce acetyl co-A which is fed into Krebs cycle: meaning amount of Acetyl-CoA increases
- the rate of glycolysis decreases, G6P from glycolysis is shunted to the PPP; less glycolysis= less G6P entering PPP than normal person=less NADPH being produced
- understand that to compensate and still make energy in a person with uncontrolled diabetes where the glu is not entering cells, the body finds other ways to make products of glycolysis/PDC, i.e. Acetyl-CoA to feed into Krebs cycle and still produce E to keep body alive.
