The Supreme Court has original and exclusive jurisdiction over cases and controversies between two or more states.
The Supreme Court has original and discretionary jurisdiction over cases and controversies that involve ambassadors, public ministers, or consuls; are between the United States and a state; or involve a state against aliens or citizens of another state.
Cases may be filed in lower federal Court or Supreme Court.
When the government treats two similarily situated groups differently based on classification - equal protection is being tested.
ex: ligitimate and illigitimate children
The law must be substantially related to a legitimate state interest.
Equal protection questions -equal protection language- states rational bases for treating illigitimate children different from ligitimate children.
In order for a plaintiff to possess standing in a civil action a party must possess a significant stake in the proceeding or outcome.
1. Injury-imminent threat of injury or injury in fact
2. Causation-party caused the injury
3. Redressability-relief available
An association my sue on a members behalf if the member has standing and the association desires to protect interests that relate to its objectives
