Mass spectrometry
An analytical technique used to identify compounds and their molecular formula
High resolution mass spec
- More sensitive form of mass spec
- Allows Mr of substance to be determined to several decimal places
- Precise atomic masses always given & can then be used calculate the molecular formula of compound tested
Infrared Spectroscopy
-Uses infrared (IR) radiation to determine functional groups present in organic compounds
- IR radiation passed through sample where different types of bonds absorb the radiation in digfferent amounts
- Varying amount of absorbance are measured & recorded- allows certain bonds & therefore,
