Erickson’s 5th Stage: Identity vs Role Confusion
-Thank Ashley for introduction
-I am Mexican-American have been accustomed to both cultures which is known as biculturalism. Recently struggled with identity
-I feel like I lost part of my identity while growing up.
-Geron discussion about being buried or cremated
-Asked family and all said buried in Mexico.
-Siblings: lived in Mexico throughout their childhood. Funny part we all lived in Hanford for most of our lives. Yet they still would prefer to be buried in Mexico.
-Makes sense bc they have hold their Mexican roots unlike me bc I have been “Americanized”
-Felt left out because I felt like I don’t belong any in one place
- Not Mexican enough but also not American enough don’t belong in one place
-Moana struggled w/identity
-Felt she can do more for her ppl
-There was something missing in her life
-Many characters struggled. They both cared about how they were perceived by others, and those beliefs determined their roles that they played.
(Nye-Greee-Scence) Nigrescence Theory
-African Americans go through these 4 stages throughout their lives.
-1st stage: pre-encounter
-Believe negative stereotypes about their race
-Study: Play,nice, and bad
-2nd stage: encounter
-re-evaluate those beliefs because they realize those negative stereotypes are not who they are.
-3rd stage: Immersion
-sense of who they are. They are at this stage where they are okay and ready to accept their identity, which leads to the final stage.
-Final stage: Internalization
-They have finally accepted and embraced who they are.
-Sad ppl go thru this. People should be at the final stage since the very beginning.
-representation in the media matters. They should see people like them as princesses and heroes, and not as villains, and criminals.
-Thank you now I’ll pass it back to Ashley
