1. Specific types of injury caused by incorrect manual handling of loads are: Back injuries. Muscle strains and sprains. Hernias. Cuts, abrasions and bruises. Bone injuries, particularly to toes and fingers. WRULDs. Musculoskeletal disorders.
Outline the main features of the good lifting technique that should be followed by a worker when lifting a load from the ground in order to avoid manual handling injury.
The following are important to ensure a safe lifting technique: Stop and think. Assess the weight of the load. Bend the knees. Keep the back straight. Get a good grip on the load. Use of body weight. Keep the load close to the body. Don’t twist the body. Position the feet slightly apart. Keep the shoulders and hips in line (same direction). Lift steadily using the leg muscles to straighten up.
Identify TWO ways that would allow a manual handling operation to be completely avoided.
(b) The task can be avoided by mechanisation and use of: FLTs. Hoists. Cranes. Conveyors.
