Ideas of liberalism :
-Political ideas. National sovereignty, separation of powers and quality before the law
-Economic ideas. Free enterprise and free trade
-Example of freedoms. Freedom of religion, speech and the press
The ideas of Nationalism : what is a nation?
-People that feel they belong to a particular group of people
-People that share language and customs
-People who have the sase history
-People who live in a particular geographical area
Ideas : many people in Europe didn't have a national identy
-Because they lived in countries controlled by other empires : example = the greeks that lived under the role of the ottoman empire
-They wanted gain independence to lives in their own nation
-Sometimes, nationalism led people to believe that their nation was better or more important than other nations
The revolution in 1848 ( the Spring of Nations) :
-Louis Philippe was iniatially a popular king
-But in 1848... Wages were falling and the unemployement and inflaction were increasing
-Once again people in Paris put up barricades and matched on the royal palace
-Louis Philippe escaped to Britain and a new Republica was created in France : The French Second Republic
-The revolution spread all over Europe againist absolute monarchies
-These revolutions are known as the Spring of Nations, because many of rebellions were nationalist
